Ice Cube Special: Top Reasons He's 'The West', Top 5 Collabos & Top 5 Albums

You don't just wake up and decide to name your album something as bold and confrontational as I Am the West, unless you have the credentials to back it up and there really isn't a better representative for the west coast than the icon himself, Ice Cube. With over 20 years in the game, 18 album credits to his name, countless hits, and a few classics beefs under his belt, Cube is the quintessential west coast rapper.

After a brief hiatus from music, the West Coast veteran returned this summer with the announcement that he will be releasing his ninth solo album, I Am the West, and that's when the drama started. We witnessed Cube in a back and forth with some west coast young cats, taking part in another hit movie via Lottery Ticket, and some new material from the original gangsta rapper that dismissed any thoughts that he fell off. With his album slated to drop out, we were able to catch up with Ice Cube and speak on a few topics surrounding his latest album and everything that goes with is.

What does it really mean to be West Coast? There has to more than what we see in rap videos and movies, so who better to ask about it than a true hip-hop legend on the left side of the country, Ice Cube himself? When you declare that you are "the West," you should at least be able to say why, so we asked Cube to give us his top reasons why he feels he is the West.

1 - "I've been repping the West since day one."

2 - "I'm one of the godfathers of gangsta rap and sometimes when you've been doing it for a long time you got to piss on a few trees to let them know you're still around."

3 - "I want to embrace the music that we made famous as well as highlight, let people know our contribution to hip-hop, and embrace the style that the industry has basically thrown away and basically said it's played out even though everybody else is doing the same version of the sh** we invented. It's just only right. It ain't no diss on no other coast, or no diss on no other territory. It's just basically putting the flag down on our territory and saying this is what I am and you can take it or leave it. It sucks man. You know, it feels f***ed up, it feels like you're getting something stolen from you, and I don't mind people because in hip-hop it's a copycat league. If you do something fly, everybody's going to be doing it so that don't bother me. What bothers me is when we're not acknowledged no more for doing it, even though these guys are doing the exact same thing. It's like they're stealing our sh** and selling it and then telling us it's wack and I'm like 'Wait a minute, but y'all doing the same thing.' It's kind of like frustrating."

When you hear that Ice Cube is putting out a new album, you want to know which songs are going to bang the hardest, so we took the pleasure of asking the man himself which tracks from I Am The West are some of his favorites.

The near beef with the West Coast's next generation of rappers was the talk of the summer and for awhile it seemed like we were going to get a full fledged battle and see Cube relive his "No Vaseline" days, but things simmered down. We still wanted to get his thoughts on the situation now that cooler heads have seemingly prevailed.

1 - "Yeah I think it's dead and I think it's dead to them too."

2 - "I think everybody really don't see no future in beefs, not with me, so everybody's pretty much cool."

3 - "I ain't addressing it, but I will if motherf***ers come out the woodworks and get their feelings hurt."

4 - "I already said I wasn't saying no names right now, but I am adding names."

When you've been in the game for over 20 years and have been a part of as many classic albums as Ice Cube, it's a pretty good bet that there has been collaboration or two that really stood out above the rest. So we asked Cube to give us the scoop on some of his most memorable collaborations.

1 - "Of course Dr. Dre got to be top of the list."

2 - "The Bomb Squad because they were creatively superior to any other group that I've ever worked with."

3 - "Chuck D just because he's my favorite rapper and it was an honor to be able to do records with him."

Nevermind the fact that Ice Cube has a catalog deep enough to warrant his own top 5 greatest west coast albums, we decided to ask Cube to let us in on his personal list of favorite albums from the best coast.

Dr. Dre Says Unauthorized Leaks Scrapped From ‘Detox’ Album

Dr. Dre has been recording and fine-tuning tracks for the forever-delayed Detox album, but earlier this year, its much-hyped first single leaked ... way ahead of time, and not complete.

Fans flocked to the Internet to download an MP3 or stream of Dre's Jay-Z-assisted "Under Pressure," even without a hook in place. Then two month later, another supposed Detox track leaked.

That early taste of the album won't actually be on the album, the good doctor said recently. According to the legendary producer the unauthorized leaks won't make the cut, because he's been recording brand new material to take its place.

"There's no leaks that came out that's gonna be on the record," Dre told DJ Iroc backstage at the historic Eminem/Jay-Z concert at Yankee Stadium. "I got hard new sh**, had a little bit of leak in my security and what have you, but I got new sh** coming and trust me, it will not be anticippointment, you know what I mean? Y'all n****s gonna love this sh**."

He told Vibe last month that the music leaks hit the net due to a hacker getting into emails from his camp ... which has made him up his security.

"Somebody actually hacked into our emails, so that made our red flags go up. We're in a new age and that's a sign: Wake up motherf***er. You have to be more careful with your sh**. That's all there is to it. I know what's up now," Dre said.

Despite all the hard work Dre's camp has done to keep his music under wraps, it doesn't seem that the long-awaited Detox record is anywhere closer to getting released.

Ice Cube Says Dre ‘Went M.I.A.’, Calls Their Relationship ‘Distant’

Ice Cube's new album, I Am The West, drops next Tuesday (September 28). But, for those expecting a Dr. Dre-produced track, don't hold your breath.

While Cube revealed in a recent interview with Rap-Up.com that he did, in fact, record a few tracks with the good doctor, they were never finished. So for now, they're in Cube's vaults ... to be released sometime in the unknown future.

According to Cube, he wasn't able to complete the Dr. Dre tracks because the producer disappeared.

"Those tracks didn't get finished. Dre went M.I.A., I don't know where he at. If ya'll find him, tell him to give me a call," Cube told the website.

"It's cool, he went M.I.A. on Snoop too," he continued. "Everybody wanna work with him, so it's up to him on who he wants work with, who he don't wanna work with. We did the records, but we didn't finish them. So, I felt like I didn't wanna put them out unless they was finished. Or, what's the use? I'll get em finished sooner or later, and put em out."

Ice Cube also opened up about his relationship with Dre, which he calls a "distant" one. Apparently, ever since he split from N.W.A. in the early 1990s, he, Dre and many others in the group grew apart, and that's where it still stands to this very day.

"It's a distant relationship. It's been distant ever since I left NWA, so I don't expect that to change," Cube said of his relationship with Dre in the present. "We all went out separate ways back then, we was youngstas. We're grown now. That is what it is. It reminds me of like somebody I hung out in high school a lot, but now that you grown, you talk to every now and then. That kind of how I look at it."

Even without Dre or a major label backing him, Cube continues to enjoy success in music. In 2006, the rapper went completely independent, releasing Laugh Now, Cry Later via his own Lench Mob Records. The LP was a success, garnering gold certification by the RIAA. In 2008, he dropped Raw Footage, which sold over 300,000 copies in the U.S. and 500,000 copies worldwide, according to Wikipedia.

Now, in 2010, Cube hopes to continue his indie success with I Am The West, which hits stores Tuesday, September 28th.

Ice Cube Vs. Mack 10

If you didnt know Ice Cube and Mack 10 have been beefing for some time now and truthfully im kind of pissed off about it Westside Connection was my favorite rap group no joke. In a recent interview Ice Cube addressed the beef saying he would make some records again but "Mack would have to Kiss the ring" if he wanted to get back in Westside Connection. Thats real fucked up these guys have been homies forever and he says that to the media that not right! Mack 10 recently responded to what he said to Allhiphop.com this is what he said.

"I laughed. I see that he's taking his comedy to the next level now," the rapper said. "When I heard the 'kiss the ring' comment, I just had to laugh because that's comedy. That's where I'm at with it. I don't know what he's tripping off of.

"I guess it's more of a big deal than what I thought it was,

"I didn't do anything to him and he didn't do anything to me. We had an argument and I guess it was taken the wrong way because his wife was present," Mack 10 explained. If she wasn't there, we would probably still be doing records. His brother-in-law was disrespectful in a certain way ...

"It was over his disrespectful brother-in-law and I guess that's what he meant when he said that I crossed the line or the family line," he continued. "I didn't cross any line. He (the brother-in-law) got into it with several of my people. To keep it real with you, I don't know what dude is tripping off of. Whatever happened that night, it wasn't worth The Westside Connection not doing anymore records together."

"It was brought to Cube about three or four times before the bullsh** happened," he explained. "If I bring something to you three or four times and you don't do anything about it -- I mean just because a kid is your kid doesn't mean he has the right to go spitting about anybody. The argument and the brother-in-law wasn't worth throwing away the Westside Connection over in my opinion."

I Love Cube but lately his been thinking he was Al Pacino in Scarface or something his been going at mad new rappers from the West. His been saying he doesnt need to help out these new rappers. No he doesnt need to help them but you dont have to diss them either. Yea you started this gangster rap shit but that doesnt mean you cant be token out by one of these young bucks! He has been going at Jay Rock and Nipsey i really think its just jealously now for real he is really looking like 50 Cent he cant be down with them so he just disses them. I really want to see Jay Rock go at him on wax but just a reminder Jay Rock and SOME i repeat some of these niggas are from the street and dont play! but must are just studio gangsters.
